BLOG#1 Artist Statement

Everyone has own stories to tell. I have got one too.

I was born and grew up in a small county in Japan surrounded by richness of nature, such as pacific ocean, bay, mountains, and a lot of agricultural sights. I started learning English as my second language when I was 13 as a mandatory education carriculam at school.  It was very beginning of my journey. I just LOVED learning English.  For me, being able to communicate in English was a crucial gateway to communicate people all over the world. I dreamt exploring every county in the world, widening my perspectives, and making friends. They are still my motivations and course of inspirations. By the end of my high school life, instead of going a Japanese university, I decided to go to a prestigious training school in the city of Osaka to prepare myself attend college in the Unites States. After less than three years, here I am studying at Hunter with AA degree earned from SUNY community college in upstate New York! Sometime it is crazy to think I have been through all the drastic changes in last five years.

My life has been journey. It is like a traveling. I love traveling. I see traveling as a way to look into some body's life and find various perspectives. I even get inspirations of how I want to live my life from somebody I met for a day. Every person I make connections with when traveling or living here has something to offer that makes living more interesting. It's also intriguing to me to see how diverse people and culture in the world. They are just so DIFFERENT. However, I have found some similarities among people and culture as well.  After all, we are all humans and have more things in common than we imagine. Through media, especially in documentary forms, I would like create something that inform people about different and similar cultural values so that people will be inspired and care each other. The idea is still vague, but I want to build up more ideas on this basis.

I have never pursued seriously turn my creativity into art forms.  I just enjoy keeping several journals. I guess I don't want to be a person who says, "I think I am creative but I don't think I am an artist." I want to learn HOW I can produce something creative and  meaningful out of my creativity and perspectives. Maybe, saying, "I want to create changes in the world" is cliche, but I believe obtaining skills on media field, such as video production and editing would be my first step to open up many opportunities. I look forward to seeing some growth and practicality in me at the end of semester.

I am not sure of the end of my journey, but I will see where my life takes me.
