BLOG#4 MOMI VISIT

A visit to Museum of Moving of Moving Image was such a fun and educational experience that enriched my knowledge of media studies. It was pretty amazing to see what I learned over the semesters at Hunter, such as history and developments of moving images and technologies that have been invented. Although I have visited museums all over the world, I realized that it would be a richer experience to go to a museum of the materials of which I have basic understanding. Having a tour guide who provided us in-depth and insightful explanation was absolutely amazing to actually try to know the contexts behind the exhibitions, not just taking pictures. Absorbing information using my sensory systems such as seeing or touching was more intimate experience than simply reading a textbook and looking up images online. I also learned that human beings throughout history have the passion and obsession for creating moving images. The tour guide informed us that the proofs of people utilizing the power of paintings could trace back to the caves in prehistory. What’s more interesting is that since those paintings were drew where it was not easily accessible or appreciated, they were most likely not for art but as a means to communicate with each other and send messages. Today, having highest quality image on any device any time has become almost standards. It is significantly easy to forget all the accomplishments and efforts made in order to attain what we currently have. Observing old equipments that looked so heavy and incapable of moving around, I honestly appreciate the time I live as a media content producer. Simultaneously, I was fascinated by technology people invented in the past such as thaumatrope and zoetrope. Obviously, they are not compatible with what we use today, but the feelings they conveyed were nostalgic. I feel like those old technologies such as record player have gained attention and appreciation again as a backlash of new, rapid, and revolutionary advancements of the field of media. Due to the time limit, we could not observe some parts of the museum. I can not wait to visit there again once the semester is over! The motto I consciously have these days is to find, learn, and take something new everyday into myself. Taking opportunity that’s in front of me is crucial because I never know what the opportunity would bring to me. I think the field trip was one of those opportunities that opened my eyes!
